When should you travel to Tanzania?

The best time to explore Tanzania is between July and September, when the dry season offers ideal safari conditions and breathtaking views of wildlife. From November to April, the rainy season transforms the landscape into a lush paradise, though travel can be more challenging – perfect for true adventurers!

How do you get to Tanzania?

Tanzania is well-connected to many parts of the world, thanks to a wide range of international airlines and several major airports across the country.

Even if you are not yet sure which airport you will be departing from, you can confidently plan your trip — most European, Middle Eastern, and African hubs offer excellent connections to Tanzania.

Most common travel routes

You can reach Tanzania with just one layover, using any of the following airlines:

  • Turkish Airlines – via Istanbul

  • Qatar Airways – via Doha

  • Emirates – via Dubai

  • KLM – via Amsterdam

  • Ethiopian Airlines – via Addis Ababa

Visa requirements for Tanzania

Visa requirements for entering Tanzania depend on the traveler’s nationality. For more information, please visit https://www.immigration.go.tz/.

Most travelers – including citizens of the European Union, United States, Canada, and Australia – can apply for a visa either online or upon arrival at Tanzanian airports.

  • E-Visa: Apply online via the official e-visa portal at https://visa.immigration.go.tz

  • Visa on Arrival: Available at major airports; typically costs USD 50, while U.S. citizens pay USD 100

To apply for a Tanzanian visa, travelers typically need the following:

  • A passport valid for at least 6 months

  • A completed visa application

  • A passport-size photo

  • A return flight ticket or proof of travel plans

  • Visa fee (payable in USD)

Health information

Yellow fever vaccination: Required only if you are arriving from a country where yellow fever is endemic (e.g. Kenya, Rwanda).

Recommended vaccinations:

  • Hepatitis A and B

  • Typhoid

  • Tetanus

Health and hygiene tips:

  • Drink only bottled water

  • Use mosquito repellent and wear long-sleeved clothing

  • Bring sunscreen, hand sanitizer, and a basic medical kit with essential medications

How can you pay in Tanzania?

  • The official currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS)

  • The US dollar is widely accepted, especially banknotes issued after 2009

  • Credit card payments are uncommon – we recommend that you always carry cash with you

What should you absolutely not forget to pack?

  • Light, closed clothing for safaris

  • A warm sweater if you are planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro

  • Swimsuit and flip-flops (especially if you are visiting Zanzibar)

  • Mosquito repellent, sunscreen, and basic medications

  • Your passport, visa confirmation, and vaccination card

Important: Please avoid wearing overly revealing clothing and respect the local culture, especially in villages and religious sites.
